Packing and securing out-of-gauge cargo
Out-of-gauge cargo is prepared to a project: support and lashing points are calculated, cradles are made to the shape of the cargo, and the centre of gravity and weight are marked on the item itself. Lashing on a lowloader or platform uses chains and straps rated for 1 g longitudinally; above 4 m in height, with escort and bridge measurements.
Documents and permits
Besides the usual set: out-of-gauge permits for every country on the route (in the EU issued for a specific vehicle and route, with lead times of 1–3 weeks), a stowage and lashing plan, a surveyor’s report for sea transport, and for heavy loads approval from the owners of roads and bridges in Russia.
The costly mistake made most often
A 10 cm error in the declared height: the permit was issued for different dimensions, the truck waits at the border for weeks, and the downtime of the lowloader and escort costs hundreds of euros a day. Dimensions and weight must be measured on the finished cargo ready for loading, not taken from the drawing.
Which mode usually works out best
Up to 24 t and moderate over-dimensions: a lowloader from Europe with permits, 10–20 days. Heavy and large items: by sea on a flat rack, open top or as breakbulk via Rotterdam, from 2 weeks, then a lowloader or platform within Russia. Rail platforms for long items from China.
