Packing and securing computers and servers
Servers and storage systems travel in racks only with transport fixings, or are taken out of the rack and packed one by one in factory cartons with antistatic protection. Laptops and PCs go in cartons of 5–10 units in a pallet box with tamper tape; laptop lithium batteries need UN3481 marking.
Documents and permits
A declaration under TR CU 004/2011 and TR CU 020/2011, plus an FSB notification for devices with encryption — which means practically all modern computers and network equipment. Server and network equipment in a number of categories falls under EU and US export controls: a check against the dual-use lists is needed before payment.
The costly mistake made most often
Buying servers from a European supplier without checking them against the sanctions lists: part of the codes in headings 8471 and 8517 are banned from export to Russia; the supplier lodges the EX1 and discovers the ban only at the customs office of exit. The money takes a long time to come back, and the goods stay in the EU.
Which mode usually works out best
Computer equipment is expensive and light — air is justified almost always: 3–7 days, minimal transhipment, insurance. Large consignments of laptops or monitors go as groupage containers from Asia or on a dedicated truck from Europe with a seal and GPS monitoring.
Export controls and sanctions
We check every model and HS code against EU, UK and US export controls and sanctions and screen the end user before quoting. Items on the banned lists — including the codes in 8471 and 8517 mentioned above — are declined.
