Packing and securing furniture and interior items
Cabinet furniture travels flat-packed, each part in cardboard with corner protectors; fronts and glass upright in crates. Upholstered furniture in stretch and protective film, with no load on top. Solid-wood furniture is sensitive to humidity — on the sea leg a container with dehumidifiers is needed.
Documents and permits
A declaration under TR CU 025/2012 “On the safety of furniture products”; children’s furniture must meet stricter parameters. Furniture made of valuable timber species may require a CITES permit, and timber packaging needs the IPPC mark. Italian and German furniture above the price threshold is checked against the EU “luxury goods” rules.
The costly mistake made most often
Ordering furniture on EXW terms without arranging the EX1 through an agent: an Italian factory does not handle export itself, the goods sit in the warehouse, and the supplier charges 22 % VAT. The second mistake is not checking the EU “luxury” threshold for expensive items before payment.
Which mode usually works out best
Furniture is bulky and relatively light: the rate is calculated by cubic metres, so from Europe a dedicated truck or groupage through consolidation, 8–16 days, works best. From Asia, FCL — a 40-foot container takes the furnishings of several flats. Air is not used for furniture.
