Shipping from Europe to Russia via Rotterdam: the complete 2026 guide

12 May 2026

A detailed look at our main scheme: consolidation at the port of Rotterdam, sea freight to St Petersburg, customs clearance and onward delivery across Russia. Transit times, prices and documents.

Why Rotterdam is the main gateway for European goods

Rotterdam is Europe’s largest seaport and a natural consolidation hub for goods from the whole continent. Flows from Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Benelux countries and Scandinavia pass through it. For deliveries to Russia this means one thing: wherever you are in the EU, your goods can be trucked to our warehouse in the Rotterdam area, combined with other consignments and shipped by sea as one consolidated load.

We use Rotterdam as the anchor point of the Europe → Russia route. Groupage (LCL) from different suppliers is consolidated at the warehouse, a combined shipment is formed and sent by a shipping line to St Petersburg. Full containers (FCL) travel the same route without transhipment. The scheme gives transparent cost and predictable timing even for small consignments — from a single carton.

Transit time and alternatives

The Rotterdam – St Petersburg sea leg takes 6–7 days in transit, plus time for consolidation and forming the shipment: groupage (LCL) takes about 2 weeks, a full container (FCL) 6–7 days in transit, and the container must be declared to the port 3 days before the vessel sails. For urgent goods there is an alternative — a fast road corridor via Poland and the Baltics, which cuts the time to 5–8 days but costs more per unit of volume.

Cost: LCL, FCL and what it depends on

For groupage (LCL) the cost is calculated by pallets and loading metres (LDM); the reference on the Rotterdam → St Petersburg lane starts at about €250–400 per place and then follows a sliding scale by volume and weight. A full container (FCL) is charged at a fixed rate per 20- or 40-foot container, which pays off for large volumes.

The final price depends on volume and weight, type of goods, the need for special packaging or temperature control, and additional services — insurance, opening the EX1, payment to the supplier. Our managers calculate the exact rate for your consignment, and a preliminary LCL estimate is available in the calculator on the website.

Customs handled for you, and documents

We take care of customs clearance: preparing and checking the invoice, packing list, contract and transport documents, determining the HS code, calculating duties and VAT, lodging the declaration and releasing the goods. Where needed we open the EX1 export declaration in Europe — which gives you proof of export for VAT zero-rating — and arrange payment to the supplier.

A correctly prepared set of documents is the main condition for a fast border crossing. We check the paperwork before the goods are dispatched, which rules out downtime and additional charges. A personal manager follows the shipment all the way, so you always know where the goods are.

Sanctions screening comes first

We only handle goods that are not subject to EU, UK, Swiss or US sanctions. Before we quote, we check the HS code of every item and screen all parties to the deal; if a product or a party is restricted, we decline the order, whatever the route or the price.
