Dangerous goods (ADR/IMDG)
Dangerous goods are cargo with special transport requirements, classified by hazard class.
What counts as dangerous goods?
Dangerous goods (chemicals, batteries, aerosols and more) are classified by hazard class and carried under the ADR rules (road) and IMDG Code (sea). They require special documentation, packaging and marking, and sometimes a dedicated vehicle.
We carry many classes provided the documents are properly prepared — check with us in advance, before the goods are packed.
How it works in practice
We accept dangerous goods with a safety data sheet (MSDS/SDS) showing the hazard class and UN number: from it we determine which mode of transport and which packaging can be used. Road freight moves under ADR with a certified driver and vehicle, sea under IMDG with a shipper’s declaration, and air under IATA DGR, where many substances are forbidden altogether.
Batteries, aerosols, paints and chemical raw materials are typical goods that shippers do not think of as dangerous — until the carrier refuses to accept them.
Dangerous goods: frequently asked questions
How do I know whether my goods are dangerous?
From the manufacturer’s safety data sheet: section 14 gives the UN number, class and packing group. If there is no MSDS for the product, obtain one from the manufacturer — without it the carrier will not accept the goods.
Can lithium batteries be shipped?
Yes, with restrictions: by road and sea as class 9 dangerous goods with certified packaging and marking; by air only if IATA requirements on power and packaging are met, and some shipments are forbidden. Equipment with built-in batteries is simpler to ship than loose batteries.
How much more does dangerous goods transport cost?
The surcharge is usually 20–50% on the normal rate, because of the requirements for the vehicle, packaging and documents; at sea there is a separate tariff line. Groupage is not available for some classes, which need dedicated transport.
