Receiving the goods and the last mile
In Yekaterinburg the central part of the city is closed off by a “truck frame”: 22 junctions carry sign 3.4 “No goods vehicles”, at some of them the ban applies from 6:00 to 22:00, and since 1 July 2026 cameras detect vehicles passing the sign automatically. Only single vehicles without a trailer, weighing no more than 26 t and serving businesses inside the zone, are exempt, so a truck with groupage is unloaded at a site outside the frame and the goods are taken to an address in the centre by smaller vehicles. Truck signs — including lane restrictions — are also in place on the EKAD ring road, on the road to Koltsovo and on the exits towards Nizhny Tagil and Serov, so the delivery scheme is agreed before the truck leaves, not on the approach to the city.
Seasons and weather
Winter in Yekaterinburg is unpleasant not so much for the cold as for the swings: an average January temperature of about −12.6 °C and an absolute minimum of −44.6 °C go together with roughly four days of thaw in a calendar winter. Cargo goes through a “frost — above zero — frost” cycle, so liquids in glass and plastic, paints, adhesives and batteries travel in an insulated trailer from November to March, and pallets are not left outside between transhipments. Snow cover is on average deepest in February — about 42 cm — while the historical maximum of 81 cm fell in March, and in winter the bottleneck is not the highway but the access roads and the consignee’s yard: clearing and the availability of a forklift are confirmed before the truck is sent to unload.

Two regional particularities: precious metals and stones are cleared only by the specialised Malakhit post (covering the Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan and Tyumen regions, KhMAO and YaNAO), and residents of the Titanium Valley special economic zone at the Uktus site within Yekaterinburg operate under a free customs zone.
What most often breaks the schedule
The western approach to Yekaterinburg changed on 16 July 2025 when the Dyurtyuli–Achit section of the M-12 “Vostok” opened: travel time fell, but the section is tolled, and if the toll is not included in the rate it surfaces as an extra cost or the truck takes a longer free route. Further on, from Achit to the city, the road is being widened in stages (sections at km 232–250 and 276–301 were completed by October 2024), and roadworks narrowing on this approach regularly eat into the time margin. The second typical disruption is inspection: the declaration centre takes the decision remotely, but the goods are opened at the temporary storage warehouse where they are held, and days of waiting are paid to the warehouse, so packing and documents are prepared for a possible inspection in advance, before the truck or flight arrives.
