Guide: shipping cargo from China to Russia
Tranzit3 moves cargo from China to Russia by rail, road, sea and air, with purchasing and consolidation at our warehouses in China, customs clearance and certification included. We match the mode to the volume, budget and urgency of each order.
Ways to ship from China: choosing the right mode
We collect from all of China’s industrial centres — Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, Ningbo, Qingdao, Yiwu. Official import follows the fully declared (“white”) route: a contract, the full customs value and certificates. We also describe the separate all-in “cargo” option and its limitations in our guide to cargo from China. Before Chinese New Year and in high season (September–December) rates and port queues rise, so we plan consignments 3–4 weeks earlier.
There are four main ways to move cargo from China to Russia, each with its own logic. Rail (container trains) is the practical middle ground between time and cost and suits most B2B orders and marketplace goods. Road gives door-to-door flexibility and works well for groupage and urgent small lots. Sea is the most economical channel for large volumes, but the slowest. Air is for urgent, light and high-value goods where speed matters more than the freight price.
The choice comes down to three parameters: volume (weight and cubic metres), urgency and price sensitivity. A full container of inexpensive goods with no hard deadline — look at sea or rail. A lot of 1–10 m³ needed within three or four weeks — look at road or rail consolidation (LCL). Light, expensive and urgent — air solves it in days. In practice we often combine: the main lot goes by sea or rail, a trial or top-up order by road or air.
The loading format matters too. FCL (Full Container Load) means booking a whole container (20′, 40′, 40′HC) and pays off from roughly 15 m³. LCL (Less than Container Load) is groupage, where only your cubic metres in a shared container are charged; it is sensible for smaller lots. We help work out the point at which LCL stops paying off and a dedicated container is the better choice.
Rail: container trains from China
Regular container trains have become the main channel for importers in recent years. They leave China’s key terminals (Chongqing, Xi’an, Chengdu, Hefei, Wuhu, Yiwu and others) for Moscow and the central hubs via the Zabaikalsk/Manzhouli and Naushki border crossings, including transit routes through Mongolia and Kazakhstan. According to market operators, new regular services were launched in 2025 (for example from Wuhu and Hefei to Moscow), increasing departure frequency and the predictability of transit times.
The indicative transit time by direct container train is from 14–18 days to Moscow, around 15 days on express services in some cases; including terminal handling and delivery to the consignee’s warehouse, allow 18–30 days. That is noticeably faster than sea via western ports and cheaper than air. Rail works equally well for FCL and LCL — groupage lots are consolidated at our warehouse in China and loaded into a shared container.
Indicative rates (depending on season, route and market load): FCL 40′HC approximately €5,200–6,500 per container (a market range to show the order of magnitude); groupage is priced per package — from €200 per package and from €500 per euro pallet. The exact rate is fixed for the specific route, weight and type of goods. Rail is sensitive to peak periods (pre-New Year demand, Chinese holidays), when times and prices rise, so we plan departures in advance.
In practice: we collect from the factory, consolidate at our warehouse in China, lodge the export declaration and load the train; Russian customs clearance takes place at the destination station or a nearby temporary storage warehouse. Trains also run via Dostyk (Kazakhstan) to Moscow, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk, with door-to-door times of 20–30 days. Certain dangerous goods and restricted items are not accepted by rail; batteries and battery-powered equipment need class 9 documents.
Road, sea and air: when to use each
Road
For groupage and consignments that need door-to-door delivery without extra handling. Indicative time to Moscow 14–25 days depending on route and border crossings. Good for urgent small lots and top-ups, and when one carrier should control the whole leg. Rates are calculated individually by weight, volume and cargo type.
Sea
The cheapest option for large volumes. Via the Far East ports (Vladivostok, Vostochny) the sea leg from China takes about 7–15 days, then road or rail across Russia — usually 25–40 days to Moscow in total. Via Novorossiysk the sea leg alone is about 20–35 days, 45–55 days overall. FCL and LCL both available.
Air
The fastest channel: about 3–10 days door to door including clearance. Justified for light, compact, high-value goods (electronics, samples, spare parts, perishables) and urgent top-ups. For heavy, bulky lots air quickly becomes uneconomical because of volumetric weight charging.
Purchasing, consolidation and supplier checks
Many Russian buyers, especially marketplace sellers, prefer not to settle directly with Chinese factories. Our purchasing service covers this: we pay the supplier for the order, receive the goods at our warehouse, check quantity and visible conformity, repack if needed and assemble the consignment. For you as the supplier this means payment from a known counterparty and a clear handover at our warehouse; for the buyer it reduces risk on 1688, Taobao, Alibaba and direct factory orders.
Consolidation combines goods from several suppliers into one shipment. Each supplier delivers to our warehouse and we build a single consignment: logistics are cheaper (one container or one groupage volume instead of many small shipments) and clearance is simpler. The warehouse keeps a package register, takes photos and, where needed, weighs and measures for an accurate freight calculation.
Supplier checks reduce commercial risk before payment. The basic check covers the company’s legal status, marketplace track record and bank details. The extended check is a pre-shipment inspection (quality control, counting, completeness and packaging). For new suppliers and large orders we recommend not skipping this step: resolving a claim at the Chinese warehouse is many times cheaper than dealing with defects in Russia.
Customs clearance and EAC certification
Customs clearance of imports from China follows the EAEU Customs Code. The basic document set is the sales contract, invoice, packing list, transport documents and product permits. For the goods declaration each item is assigned an EAEU HS (TN VED) code, which determines the import duty, the VAT rate and the list of mandatory permits. A wrong code leads to additional charges and delays, so classification is one of the key steps.
Payments at import: import duty (the rate depends on the HS code; for many goods a few per cent, for some 0%), VAT at 22% from 2026 (10% for certain categories) and customs processing fees. The VAT base is the customs value plus duty (and excise for excisable goods). We help establish the customs value correctly and calculate the total burden in advance, so the landed cost is no surprise.
Certification. Goods covered by EAEU technical regulations (electronics, household appliances, children’s products, toys, furniture, clothing, cosmetics and more) need a conformity document — an EAEU certificate or declaration of conformity, less often a state registration certificate (SGR). The products carry the EAC mark, and the packaging must include information in Russian (name, manufacturer, country of origin, composition where applicable). The permit must be issued before import and is checked by customs against the register. Radio electronics with encryption may need an FSB notification. We arrange the documents and support the whole process.
Chestny Znak labelling for marketplaces and B2B
If the goods are on the mandatory digital labelling list, they cannot be sold in Russia without a Chestny Znak Data Matrix code. The list keeps growing (Russian Government Order No. 792-r of 28.04.2018), and in 2026 new groups are coming under labelling and phased permit regimes — among them pet food, non-alcoholic beer, bicycles and confectionery — and mandatory labelling is being introduced for importers of radio electronics. Whether a product must be labelled is checked by its HS code.
The codes must be applied before the goods are released into free circulation — in practice at the warehouse abroad or at a customs or temporary storage warehouse in Russia. For marketplace sellers this is especially sensitive: the platforms will not accept goods without correct labels, and mistakes mean returns and blocked listings. We build the Chestny Znak requirement into shipment planning so that codes are applied and registered on time.
In short, a sound import from China is not just cheap freight but the combination of the right HS code, a correct customs value, valid EAC certification and labelling. Tranzit3 handles the whole chain — from purchasing and consolidation in China to release in Russia and delivery to the buyer’s or the marketplace’s warehouse. Send us the cargo details and product links, and we will calculate the best route and an indicative cost.

Frequently asked questions
Which mode from China suits marketplace goods?
For regular marketplace orders the container train is usually best: a sensible balance of time (about 18–30 days) and cost. Small lots travel as LCL groupage, urgent top-ups by road or air, and large inexpensive volumes without a hard deadline by sea. We match the channel to the volume, budget and urgency.
How long does cargo take from China to Russia?
Indicatively: container train 18–30 days to Moscow, road 14–25 days, sea via Vladivostok 25–40 days, via Novorossiysk 45–55 days, air 3–10 days. Times depend on route, season and market load; exact dates are fixed per shipment.
What do purchasing and consolidation in China include?
Purchasing means we pay the supplier for the order, receive the goods at our warehouse in China, check quantity and visible conformity and repack if needed. Consolidation combines goods from several suppliers into one shipment, which lowers logistics costs and simplifies clearance. We keep a package register and take photos.
Do goods from China need an EAC certificate?
If the goods fall under EAEU technical regulations (electronics, household appliances, children’s products, toys, furniture, clothing, cosmetics and others), an EAEU certificate or declaration of conformity is required, sometimes a state registration certificate. It is issued before import and the goods carry the EAC mark. We arrange it and support the process.
What payments are due at Russian customs for goods from China?
Import duty (depending on the HS code), VAT at 22% from 2026 (10% for certain categories) and customs processing fees. The VAT base is the customs value plus duty. We calculate the total in advance so the landed cost is clear before shipment.
Do the goods need Chestny Znak labelling?
It depends on the HS code and the current mandatory labelling list, which expands every year. In 2026 new groups come under labelling and permit regimes, including radio electronics for importers. Codes are applied before the goods are released into circulation; we take this into account when planning the shipment.
