Wholesale auto parts from China: how to plan the shipment and avoid a duty reassessment

26 October 2026

Auto parts are one of the most common cargo types out of China — and one of the most common reasons customs reassesses the duty: a part classified as a "machine part" is routinely reclassified as a stand-alone article with a higher rate. Here is how to avoid that, and how the shipping itself is costed.

In short

Wholesale auto parts from China travel by rail (16–35 days) or by sea (23–55 days) — the choice depends on urgency and volume. Lots start from 50 kg, the minimum service fee is €200, and we work only with companies and sole traders.

The bigger cost risk usually is not the freight rate but the HS code: customs regularly reclassifies a component from "parts of machinery" into a stand-alone article taxed at a higher rate.

Why auto parts draw extra customs scrutiny

Auto components have a structural classification problem: the same bracket, bumper or sensor can sit either under "parts of machinery" (HS chapter 84) or as a stand-alone article in chapters 73, 74 or 85 — and the duty rates between those chapters differ noticeably. Customs will often pick the higher rate, arguing the part is theoretically usable across several industries rather than being specific to one vehicle.

Getting the code wrong is not just a bigger invoice: under Russian administrative law, a misdeclaration can bring a fine, and the lot sits at the bonded warehouse until the classification is resolved. The usual cause is a code copied from an old supplier invoice, or pulled from an online lookup tool without checking it against the actual consignment.

How the shipment itself is costed

For a lot your Russian customer needs against a confirmed order or a sales window, rail is usually the better call — the schedule is predictable, 16–35 days from the origin terminal. For a larger lot with no fixed date, sea is cheaper on volume — 23–55 days depending on the discharge port. The direction overall is covered on our [China page](/napravlenie/kitaj); for an exact quote on chargeable weight and volume, your customer can use the [China shipping calculator](/kalkulyator-dostavki-iz-kitaya).

Neither mode has a fixed published rate — both are quoted per shipment. The quote also includes clearance on the Russian side: the declaration, duty, VAT and, where the part requires it, certification.

Sanctions screening comes first

We only handle goods that are not subject to EU, UK, Swiss or US sanctions. Before we quote, we check the HS code of every item and screen all parties to the deal; if a product or a party is restricted, we decline the order, whatever the route or the price.

How Tranzit3 helps

We check the HS code for every item before the shipment goes out, not after it lands at the Russian border — that saves on duty and removes the risk of the lot sitting idle at the bonded warehouse. We do not carry sanctioned or dual-use parts, but we help classify the cargo against the EU TARIC at the quoting stage.

Send us the parts list and catalogue numbers and we will quote the route, the rate and the HS code. Leave a request on the site, call +7 800 101-60-59, or message us on Telegram.

Questions and answers

Rail or sea for auto parts from China — which is better?

Rail if the lot is tied to a confirmed order or a sales window — the schedule is predictable at 16–35 days. Sea is cheaper on volume for a larger, less time-critical lot, at 23–55 days.

Why does customs reclassify auto parts so often?

Because the same component can sit under "parts of machinery" or as a stand-alone article in a different HS chapter with a higher duty rate — customs often applies the higher one unless the classification is checked in advance.

What is the minimum lot for auto parts from China?

From 50 kg, with a minimum service fee of €200. We work only with companies and sole traders, not private shipments.

Does Tranzit3 ship sanctioned or dual-use parts?

No. We screen every item and party before quoting and decline the order if a part or a party is restricted, whatever the route.
